A Study on the Reception of 'Shijing' from a Trans-East Asian Perspective: Focusing on Examples from Visual Media in China, Korea and Japan
Abstract:
The ‘Shijing’, the oldest anthology of Chinese poetry, has long been regarded as a significant classic in the East Asian cultural sphere. Korea, China, and Japan share a deep historical context in the reception and utilization of the 'Shijing’ due to their geographical proximity and shared “Chinese character cultural sphere.” Recently, the ‘Shijing’ has been actively used in visual content across these countries, illustrating the modern reinterpretation of classics and cultural continuity. However, research on the Shijing’s reception has mostly focused on ancient times, with little comprehensive study of its modern reception. This study aims to examine the modern reception of the ‘Shijing’ from a Trans-East Asian perspective, focusing on visual content in Korea, China, and Japan to analyze how the ‘Shijing’ is interpreted and utilized in each country. By comparing these examples, the study will explore how this shared cultural heritage is reinterpreted in the modern media environment and its new meanings. The research seeks to reaffirm the modern value of classical literature and provide insights into how shared cultural assets in East Asia create new meanings in contemporary contexts.
