Abstract:
Recently, the term “trans” has frequently appeared in the field of humanities research. In linguistics, “trans” refers to an approach that, when analyzing specific linguistic phenomena, goes beyond merely observing the language in isolation. Instead, it involves simultaneously examining its relationship with related languages, exploring the influence and diffusion from surrounding languages, or investigating its typological universality and uniqueness. This study applies the concept “trans” to Chinese linguistics, specifically exploring modern Chinese modal adverbs through a cross-regional and trans-boundary approach. By comparing modal adverbs in Chinese and Korean, this article identifies both the universality and uniqueness of modern Chinese modal adverbs from a typological perspective. Further on, through preliminary examination on existing research achievements, it attempts to investigate and compare current research status and regional characteristics of studies on modern Chinese modal adverbs in China and Korea. Finally, based on the comparative results, I aim to point out the key factors that shaped regional research characteristics of modal adverbs in China and Korea. The findings of this research gain significance since they highlight the distinctive features of modern Chinese modal adverbs through comparison with other languages. In addition, they provide a comprehensive understanding of the current research status and latest advancements in the study of modern Chinese modal adverbs by analyzing research outcomes from China and Korea."
