Ancestor Myths and Witchcraft Traditions: Folk Religion As A Strategy Of Cultural Adaption For She People In Eastern Fujian
Abstract:
Pan Hu worship (盘瓠崇拜)and Lvshan Taoism(闾山道法) are of great significance for She people(畲) in Eastern Fujian, by examining local historical documents, and fieldwork data, this paper argues, to hide, or to emphasize the memories of the saga of Pan Hu, which are two opposite cultural orientations of She people,may coexisted in eastern Fujian. In fact, integrating into the society and escaping from that are both strategies of cultural adaption. In the process of She people’s settling down and localization,while resolving the political conflicts of the power and right,they make their identity intensified as the descendants of Pan Hu. At the same time,Lvshan Taoism helps to strengthen She people’s awareness of ethnic boundary by an organic integration of ancestor myths,witchcraft traditions and local Taoism. It also motivates She wizards to take part in more social life activities for they are given title of ritual specialists in a traditional naming system.

The practice of temple isolation (坐禁) in Penghu folk religion: case study of Yu Sheng temple in Baikeng village.

Abstract:
During late Ming and early Qing dynasties, inhabitants of Mainland China provinces of Fujian and Guangdong were migrating in waves to the tiny archipelago of Penghu, situated near the south-western coast of the Taiwan island. Along with their wealth and families, they brought religious customs that turned out to be a foundation for Taiwanese folk beliefs as we know them today. Originating in Penghu, zuojin (坐禁)is probably the most mystical ritual practice in Taiwanese folk religion system commonly referred to as Faism (法教). A rite of passage which was to foster spirit mediums, and high priest is now a nearly non-existent curiosity practiced only by the most devoted Faist priests and their temples. Selected among Penghu’s most talented and bright young minds (usually boys aged 8 to 13), aspiring priests were subjected to the period of forty-nine day in-temple isolation, where under strict vegetarian diet and on purpose sleep deprivation, they were learning about advanced Taoist arts including writing and usage of talismanic scripts (符令), and ritual hand gestures (手印). Although zuojin used to be a common practice among temples of Penghu and southern Taiwan, during last several decades it started to slowly disappear from country’s spiritual life. The gradual disappearance of zuojin has been regarded as an outcome of globalization, rapidly lowering birth rate in the Republic of China, and growing education standards in the country. Nowadays the practice is nearly non-existent.

Through qualitative interviews and analysis of written materials obtained during field research, I aim to introduce the practice of zuojin through the lens of Yu Sheng temple situated in the Baikeng village of Penghu, which was one of the last places to ever organize the ritual in its full forty-nine day form. My main guide to the spiritual world of Penghu islands was Xu Tianfu (許天富), a long-time head priest of the Yu Sheng temple who supervised the ritual himself, and is now regarded as one of the last remaining final authorities on the Faist ritualistic practices of Penghu archipelago.

「出馬」作為一種動物修煉而成的仙,在深受薩滿教傳統影響的中國東北文化中長期受到尊崇。其中以「胡黃白柳灰」五種動物仙最為常見,通過修煉百年後來到凡塵積累功德,以求能成為正修仙神,在民間通常與治療疾病相關聯。「出馬仙信仰」作為東北文化的重要組成部分,在東北文學的百年歷程中不乏與之相關的文學創作。本文通過分析自20世紀抗戰時期「東北流亡作家群」的寫作至近年來備受矚目的「新東北作家群」中的「出馬仙信仰」與跳神儀式,嘗試釐清「出馬仙信仰」在東北文學中的書寫路徑發生的諸種轉變。進而以「東北文藝復興三傑」之一的作家鄭執及其代表作《仙癥》為例,揭示出馬信仰與東北民俗儀式在這批當代青年作家筆下具有更為複雜的象徵意涵。他們既渴望脫離父輩建立的象徵秩序,卻又無法逃離。故而出馬仙信仰和跳神民俗活動作為東北文化象徵體系的核心,在1990年代的東北下崗潮背景之下逐漸脫離原本昏昧迷信的象徵涵義,一方面蘊藏對父輩失敗的反思與逃離,另一方面暗藏作家對東北土地的懷舊與鄉愁。此外,在對東北文學中的出馬仙信仰進行縱向歷史梳理的同時,對比「新南方文學」中關於巫術與疾病的書寫,指出當代地方文學可能存在的民俗寫作轉向

"Burma Road” in the Muslim Northwest: Centering Borderlands in Kukan

Abstract:
Reemerging as a high-profile patriotic education film at the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum, Kukan: the Battle Cry of China (1941), thanks to a long sequence of air raids descending on China’s war-time capital Chongqing, has greeted the Chinese public since 2015 as the latest documentary evidence of Japanese WWII atrocities after the publications of Iris Chang’s The Rape of Nanking (1991) and The Diaries of John Rabe (1997). The air raids footage, well over ten minutes long, has since animated much popular and academic discussion in China. The Academy award winning documentary has also engendered intense interest in Li Ling-ai, the “technical advisor” of the film, an under-credited creative force behind the film according to Asian Americanist filmmaker Robin lung. However, the “film proper,” in which at least two thirds are set in China’s southwestern and northwestern borderlands, has received no attention in English language reviews. This article focuses its analysis on the images of those borderlands and their indigenous inhabitants. A proper treatment of the bulk of the documentary’s content, I argue, brings to light little-known facts of border-crossings in the China Theater of WWII. These border-crossings, from Burma to Yunnan, Guangxi to Chongqing, Sichuan to Gansu, eastern Qinghai to the Tibetan Plateau, and extradigetically, northwestern China to Soviet Central Asia, foreground the critical role traditionally non-Sinitic parts of China played in sustaining the Chongqing-based Kuomintang regime in the Pacific War years. Aside from providing rare documentary footages on the well-told story of the “Burma Road,” images of the “Asiatic melting pot” of Gansu and Qinghai underline the heretofore unknown history of China’s northwestern Muslim transporters and road builders, who were a sine qua non force in ensuring critical supplies from the Soviet Union could reach Chongqing’s ill-equipped army via the tortuous Qilian mountains and treacherous Yellow River by mule caravans and goat-skin rafters.

作为一种重要的题材类型,中国式青春片自1990年代第六代导演以青春成长为载体的艺术电影到21世纪新媒介时代以IP电影的商业模式迅速崛起历经了一系列的嬗变。文章通过分析青春片的叙事结构、类型元素、和文化症候对21世纪融媒体时代中国电影的青春化、数字化和微转向进行解读,并探讨其类型发展流变过程中与当代中国科技、媒介、社会转型之间的关联。这一类型的融合、拓展及媒介间性也很好的体现在青春片的视听风格上,尤其是对流行音乐类型及音乐能动性的运用上。本文首次聚焦青春片的电影音乐,通过文本细读及对视听风格的剖析,并采纳“娱乐产业乌托邦”、“异托邦”和“无托邦”等概念的比照框架对中国式青春片的类型特征及融媒体时代复杂而多变的影视文化生态网络提出归纳性的阐释和进一步的理论思考。

Title:

Migration, Space, and the Cosmology of Home: A Comparative Perspective

Abstract:
Embarking from The Wandering Earth (2019), China’s first interstellar blockbuster, in which actions of the main characters are prompted by their wish to go home, this paper surveys the homecoming narratives observed in contemporary Chinese films, both commercial hits and art house films. These films include Jia Zhangke’s A Touch of Sin (2013), Zhang Yang’s Shower (1999), Getting Home (2007), Yung-Shing Teng’s Return Ticket (2011) and commercial hits such as Lost on Journey (2010). I also extend beyond Chinese features and examine how the desire for home is represented against the background of transnational economic flow and cross-border labor movements in recent films. In the South Korean drama Way Back Home (2013), Australian film Lion (2016), Taiwanese semi-autobiographical American Girl (2021), and Hollywood productions such as Nomadland (2020) and Tár (2022), migration, social mobility, and the pursuit of freedom become jumbled and in the end all eerily resemble dislocation. To confront that reality, films either affirm the validity of homecoming or refute it with a more resolute exile. These films posit one question that lies at the center of my inquiry, namely, where is home, then?

Born-Translated Chinese Videogame Genshin Impact and its Glocalization

Abstract:
This paper uses Genshin Impact, developed by Chinese game company miHoYo (HoYoverse), as a case study to connect translation theories with game studies, re-examining translation practices in contemporary Sinophone digital media. Genshin Impact has embedded translation into the game production process, enabling players worldwide to access the latest content simultaneously, altering the inherent sequence between original and translated texts to achieve a “born-translated” state. Additionally, unlike traditional localization strategies in the game industry, Genshin Impact demonstrates a path described as “glocalization” through multicultural creation and translation, providing an equal space for world cultures to showcase themselves and challenging the notion that there are dominant and subordinate cultures. The paper concludes that Genshin Impact should not be seen as a machine for cultural export but rather as one of the possibilities for future world literature. The game belongs not only to China but also to the entire world, and its born-translated characteristic and glocalization strategy welcomes players of different races and languages, allowing them to enter its world as a foreign place and engage in a detached mode of cultural experience.

钟泉艺术动画——80年代新中国文艺复兴背景下的先锋派动画

摘要:
在1992年于夏威夷国际电影节上,美国动画家大卫艾力克向美国观众正式介绍了七部中国艺术动画电影,其中两部是艺术动画代表人物钟泉的剪纸动画片《牛冤》与水墨动画片《雁阵》。
1978年中国改革开放以后出现了10年的文艺繁荣。在胡耀邦的文艺路线指导下,在改革开放后中国电影界的经济红利推动下,一种独特的国有经济支持下的文化创新活动在中国出现。当时国务院(现中共中央)电影局的经济支持下,在国务院文化部的宽松政策默许下,中国文化解出现了前所未有的繁荣,人们称之为“新中国文艺复兴的十年”。
长春电影制片厂美术分厂在这一波的文化红利中脱颖而出,在上海美术片的支援协作下,开始利用中央政府的政治经济政策,在厂长、导演钟泉的带领下生产了大批具有人文批判精神与艺术创新精神,而忽略市场需求的先蓬派艺术动画片。从1986年《象虎》、1987年的《鹰》(提名中国电影金鸡奖)、1989年的《牛冤》(获得华表奖)、1990年的《雁阵》(获得中国电影金鸡奖)等无不显示出艺术表现形式的创新与政治思维模式上的深刻反思。
在短暂的政治开放与经济红利双重加持下的动画片创新思潮迅速崛起也快速消。失然以动画家钟泉为代表的艺术院校背景的团队在21世纪迅速占领了中国动画教育产业。
他们充满人文情怀与艺术创新的制作形式成为中国动画教育的主流,在这种先锋派人文艺术动画教育的影响下,千禧一代的中国动画人开始在动画甚至电子游戏领域逐渐创造出令世界瞩目的艺术奇迹。

Title:
Gaining Pleasure in Infinite Game Worlds: Digital Reading Practices of Infinite Fiction in China

Abstract:
Infinite fiction is a popular genre of Chinese online literature characterized by protagonists navigating through various survival games in distinct small worlds with horror elements. This study examines the audiences’ fascination with this popular media by focusing on their evaluations and motivations for reading this genre. Drawing on audience research, this study challenges the textual determinism model that assumes a fixed meaning in media texts. The study combines both textual analysis of 11 infinite fiction novels with thematic analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews with 24 readers. This analysis highlights the active role of readers in their discerning criteria and preferences for evaluating satisfactory and unsatisfactory infinite fiction, as well as their active immersion, recognition, and engagement of media texts. Moreover, the findings also expand on Ang’s (1991b) argument in Watching Dallas, demonstrating that despite differences in media and content, audience perceptions and engagement with popular media share notable similarities. By examining infinite fiction through an audience-based perspective, the study provides insights into the evolving dynamics of digital reading practices in contemporary China.

Portraying Capitalists in Socialist China: Investor Characters in Chinese TV Series

Abstract:
Chinese TV shows frequently featuring capitalists and their agents is self-contradictory in a perceived socialist country with a Communist goal of eliminating capitalism. Such a problematic is resolved, this analysis shows, via the work of ideology that is unique to the Chinese context. A close examination of the portrayal of capitalists in a few popular Chinese TV series reveals that these capitalists are not greedy, selfish, and cheating investors portrayed in American movies. Instead, the Chinese investors are socially responsible, honorable, and nationalist noble men. Such a particular construct of investors is shaped by Confucianism and nationalism, the dominant ideologies in today’s China. This analysis demonstrates how ideology shapes popular culture representation within specific context.

關於莊子在「庖丁解牛」中所蘊含的「技進於道」的美學觀點,以往討論得比較多的,是以哲學的角度闡釋道與技的觀念。但是,從《莊子》庖丁解牛為典型的一系列技藝寓言故事與藝術的關係角度考慮,更值得注意的,應當是其與古代書論道技觀的內在關係。通過具體地考察「庖丁解牛」等寓言的美學意蘊,可以發現「道不離技」「技不離道」「技進於道」三者間相互依存、相互作用、相互制約,進而闡明技藝訓練、法度規矩、精神修養、「道」的境界與「技進於道」這一命題間的密切關係。因莊子道技觀的影響,古代書家要達到審美創造的最高境界,就離不開對高超技藝的掌握,進一步來說需要規矩和法度為基礎。同時,技藝訓練本身並不能作為目的,任何入道境的書家技藝已實現內部的自我超越。

Resonance thought and theories of sagely attunement in Early China

Abstract:
Much ink has been spilled describing the Five Phases cosmological system and its underlying ganying theory of resonance in Chinese thought and science. The theorist Zou Yan is considered to have proposed Five Phases thought in the 3rd c. BCE, and it rose to dominance as an all-encompassing explanation of human relationship to the cosmos during the Han. I push this timeline earlier, however, and show that resonance thought – as a logic or way of thinking about the causal relationships between objects – can be apprehended long before Zou Yan. Resonance thought, along with a “sagely attunement” model that might be understood as a specific sub-category of it, began to emerge sometime in the 4th century BCE, around the time that naturalistic cosmologies were articulated to rival competing versions of theistic, or deity-based cosmologies.
This talk examines two such models of sagely attunement: a more Confucian model outlined in the excavated Guodian manuscript, “Five Conducts,” and a Daoist model found in the “Heng Xian” (“The Primordial State of Constancy”) bamboo manuscript. I show how these varying models actually share a fundamentally similar stance that encourages sagely bodies to activate underlying resonant harmonies and responses in the world.

孝文帝所立第一任太子元恂杀人出逃案,是孝文帝统治期间发生的最为重要的政治事件之一。受正史记载影响,学界长期将元恂案置于代汉矛盾和宫廷斗争的经典叙事视角之下观察,从而忽略了该案本身记载中存在的诸多可疑细节。无论是与此案高度相关的高照容之死,还是事变当日元恂行动的细节,都显示出历史事实本身与传统的经典叙事之间存在难以弥合的裂痕。通过摘取、排列史书中保留下来的带有明确时间标识的原始材料,元恂案在北魏国史中的叙事建立过程可以被复原和建构。被广泛接受的正统元恂案叙事,是在北魏官方意志的参与下,为维护宣武帝即位合法性和正统性而建立起来的。

婦女與宗教:宋代禪修女性從官宦世家到女中丈夫的轉變

摘要:
在中國佛教各宗派中,禪宗持有較為平等的性別態度,對女性的覺悟能力給予完全的肯定。然而,即使禪宗明確地聲稱覺性沒有生理性別之差,實際史料卻仍是以男性禪師為主,其中零星的女性禪修者的紀錄顯得格外珍貴。禪宗燈錄中雖然出現過唐代禪尼的身影,但她們僅是男性禪師傳記中的一段經歷。相對地,宋代禪尼在禪宗燈錄中有了獨立的傳記和明確的傳承法系,雖人數仍然不多,但有更多的禪門女性身影是被記錄在禪門筆記中。因此,本文從宋代禪門燈錄包括《嘉泰普燈錄》、《聯燈會要》、《五燈會元》,以及禪門筆記包括《羅湖野錄》、《雲臥紀談》、《宗門武庫》、《叢林盛事》、《枯崖漫錄》等所見的禪門女性修行者,來探究這些女性禪師的參學悟道過程及傳法活動,了解她們的生活樣貌,及其在禪門系譜中的地位。她們當中多有出身於士大夫官宦世家,乃至有出身皇家后宮者,她們多在生前已獲得禪師的印證,在燈錄譜系中有明確的傳承法系,擅於以詩偈傳達悟境,他們在傳法或與男性禪師逗機往來時,展現超越性別外相的悟力。透過本研究一方面可以建構宋代女性禪師的身影,以見女性禪修者獨立的人格與智慧典型。一方面有助於了解女性在宋代禪門的處境和貢獻,建構宋代禪門女性的歷史。

Title:

Possessed by Spirits: Identities and Functions of Mediums in Tang China (618-907)

Abstract:
In short stories written or collected during the Tang dynasty (618-907), there are mentions of people whose bodies were used by spirits to convey words or actions. They were called by many names, but for the sake of clarity we will use the etic term “medium”, although the variety of emic names will also be addressed. Mediums can be defined by their association with spirit possession as a form of religious phenomenon. This paper will focus on gaining a better understanding of who these mediums were and what role they played in Tang dynasty Chinese society. This paper will start by addressing the methodological issues related to the study of less documented Chinese religious phenomena, especially when it comes to the Tang dynasty. The study of mediums in the medieval period faces a few obstacles First, there is a lack of reliable and direct sources. Second, it is difficult to identify certain situations as involving mediums. Finally, there is often no direct mention of possession, and the spirits seem to speak more than once without a clear intermediary. Then, using examples from anecdotes collected in the Taiping guangji 太平廣記 and dated to the Tang dynasty, I will question the identities and functions of the medium in Tang society. These questions will include whether the medium was a trained professional or an ordinary layman, whether he belonged to the elite or to the common people, and whether he was identified as a man or a woman. The type of spirit possession described will also be analyzed, as it may be spontaneous or induced. The rituals surrounding the possession (before, during and after) also provide information about the phenomenon and its actors. The behavior of the medium also varies; some transmit words of the entity possessing them, others do not. These words may be spoken or written in ordinary or special languages and scripts. In addition, the spirit that possesses the medium's body can be classified as benevolent or malevolent, and the interaction between the possessing entity and the rest of human society, especially the witnesses, can be positive or negative. With this paper, I hope to address a topic that is still understudied in the field of religious history, especially when it comes to religious actors in the Tang dynasty. This work may shed more light on the religious practices and actors of medieval Chinese society, as well as raise questions regarding gender and class.

一直以來,龍樹都被看作是佛教思想的革新者,因其中觀學說的成立,佛教內部出現了部派佛教與大乘佛教的根本分野。龍樹為了防止有部學說基於「假必依實」的「本體論」準則來理解「緣起論」造成的種種過失,從「認識論」的角度重新理解緣起論,不僅徹底貫徹了緣起理則,而且使得緣起論更具語言哲學的意涵。而實現此種革新的核心路徑在於引入「戲論」這一重要概念,代替原先居於首要位置的「無明」,重構了認識論視角下的緣起鏈條,即戲論——分別——煩惱、業。此種路徑實現了對緣起論的解釋方法從本體論到認識論的轉變,是龍樹對於佛教核心理論「緣起論」的一次既重理性又重實修的成功拓展。

Hostility, Heated Debates and Silent Thievery – The Thousand Faces of Vivid Religious Interaction in Early Medieval China Recorded in the Shamanic Stories of the Taiping Encyclopedias

Abstract:
The main objective of the recent paper is to offer an in-depth analysis of the development of religious life in early medieval China, focusing on the role of Chinese shamans (wu 巫) and their practices (wushu 巫術).
A key element of the author's study is the investigation of how shamanism persisted beyond the Han 漢 era (after-220 AD), along with an exploration of the various activities and rituals associated with wu that are depicted in later sources from the Song dynasty 宋朝 (960–1276). These source materials, i.e. encyclopedia Taiping yulan 太平御覽 and Taiping guangji 太平廣記, are dating back to the 10th century, and provide a unique advantage over other contemporary works: they preserve numerous accounts from the examined era that cannot be found in any other sources. Another important aspect of the analysis is an examination of the relationship between shamanism and the new religious movements emerging in the religious landscape of medieval China. Two major religious organizations, Buddhism and Taoism, are highlighted in this paper as they began their proselytizing activities during the same era and thus interacted not only with shamanism but also with one another.
A thorough examination of the rich source material in the Taiping encyclopedias provide us vital information about Chinese shamanism in the post Han period: first, the persona of wu and its shamanic activities did not disappear with the fall of the Han Dynasty, moreover it played an important part in people’s life in the turbulent historical period. Second, a categorization of shamanic activities emerges based on the application of wu techniques, depending on whether the shaman served at the imperial court, in rural areas, or during wartime.
Surprisingly, Buddhism and Taoism did not only see shamanism as a competitor and a collection of heretical practices, but in order to attract more followers, they often adopted various techniques from the wu. This religious rivalry and "thievery" are well-documented in the encyclopedias Taiping yulan and Taiping guangji. As for Buddhism, the stories often feature monks with supernatural abilities, who are portrayed as more effective healers than shamans. The tales also expose the negative karmic consequences (bao 報) associated with shamanic activities, which were often linked to Taoist practices. In the case of Taoism, it is generally observed that their main goal was to reform their system of activities and to minimize similarities to shamanistic techniques as much as possible.
Thus, the analysis of these stories offers a deeper understanding of the formation, relationships, and interactions among early medieval religious organizations. Moreover, it provides evidence for the continuity of shamanic activities during this period, which is often overlooked by scholars.

Contemporary Literati: Poet-artists in China Today

Abstract:
This presentation will explore the work of a group of poet-artists who are sometimes collectively named the “shipai” 诗派 (“poet’s group”), and who have been regularly exhibiting their visual art works in group shows since around the year 2010. More specifically, I am examining the relationship between this group and some of their classical precedents in the literati tradition. Broadly speaking, the literati tradition continues to find new expression in contemporary China, and the work of these poet-artists is a good case in point. As China grows more culturally influential in the global context going forward, understanding how ancient traditions are reformed and elaborated into more recent aesthetic trends is important. Beyond this, examining this particular group of artists who work in poetic and visual realms helps us to better understand some essential dynamics of Chinese cultural production of the past three decades, specifically in terms of the impact of market capitalism on creative work. Artists featured in this discussion include Yan Li 严力, Mang Ke 芒克, Lv De'an 吕德安, Luo Qing 罗青, Yu Xiang 宇向, Chu Yu 楚雨, and others.

Aestheticizing Stone and Script: Inscription in Three Modern Guises

Abstract:
This paper examines three, visual and/or textual representations of script by scholar-artists in late Qing and Republican China, all of which encircle a central, human figure into stone materials that further contain
carved inscriptions. First, it will consider an 1866 self-portrait by iterant artist Xuan Ding 宣鼎 (1832-1880); second, Ren Bonian's 任伯年 (1840-1896) 1886 portrait of the painter-epigrapher Wu Changshuo 吳昌碩 (1844-1927); and third, Lu Xun's (1881-1936) 1925 prose-poem Epitaph 墓碣文. The paper interrogates how and why intellectual and artistic subjectivity extend into and is absorbed by inanimate material (stone) and form (script). It will argue that an entanglement of human potential and stony script demonstrates a locating of modern identities beyond both metaphysical and material knowns. The two portraits embed the image of the scholar-artist into stone (an inkstone or a stone rubbing-like background). Antiquarian visual convention creates a contrast of black-and-white negative space that is broken only by accompanying painterly renderings of carved-in script, akin to stelae inscriptions and epigraphic calligraphy. Stone in Lu Xun’s Epitaph becomes a haunting yet stabilizing presence amidst the splitting of the literary form into something that is both prose and poem, speaking and inscribing, and this stabilizing ability forces the stone into a central narrative position. Each of these works raise questions of the simultaneous location of creative subjectivity in human form and in inanimate materiality, interconnected by script, thereby adding new dimension to the role of both script and of material in modern Chinese cultural history.

本研究旨在以「主客問答體的衰退」這一現象為起點,探討魏晉六朝時期《文心雕龍》等文論中存在的「駢體議論文」之出現,進一步思考此時期議論文作法的轉變,在漢文史上具有何種意義。
漢代的議論性文章多採用「主客問答體」展開,而六朝期的議論性文章則以「獨白式」為特點,即虛構的對談者「客」從文章中消失,議論文成為「作者/敘述者」的獨自演繹。從文章學的角度來看,客(提問者)在銜接、引導同一文章之複數論點、主題上,起著重要的作用。而一旦「客」從議論性文章中消失——或者客的位置外部化(「客」的位置與文章讀者重合)——則文章內部必須建立緊密一致的內在邏輯,才能構成連貫的議論文。這樣重大而深刻的變化,如何藉由一般被認為結構僵化、長於「描寫」與「讚頌」的「駢文」達成?正是本研究關心的主題。
在更廣泛的意義上,本研究將有助於理解漢文圈域內溝通與表達方式的變遷:透過對於駢體議論文的成立史考察與書寫構成分析,本文期望重審學界對於駢體的定見,進一步提供新的契機,促進吾人對於在19、20世紀東亞地區之「文明開化」過程中,扮演了重要角色的議論文的理解。

略论宋代官用通语、方言的政治意义与社会功能

摘要:
宋代建立了在御前奏对、接待外宾等公务场合应当使用通语而不宜使用方言的习惯性规则。使用官用通语成为官僚必备的行政素养。这一规则得以建立,主要缘于保障政务信息沟通效率和准确性的必要。除了将语言视为沟通交流的工具,宋人认为选择使用何种语言表现了身份认同。从朝廷的角度看,宋人认为朝廷应以近畿方言为正音通语。故有宋一代以汴洛之音为官用通语,象征着本朝定鼎中原的正统地位。靖康南渡后朝野仍然强调汴落之音为“正音”,正是为了强化本朝绍继北宋正统的政治认同。从官僚个人的角度看,官僚在应当使用通语的场合故意操用方言常被视为个人身份认同的表达。由此看来,宋人眼中的语言不是随机生成的符号系统,而是具有政治意义、发挥社会功能的象征体系。宋人对于官用通语(“正音”)和方言的理解,构成了近代乃至当代国人展开语言问题争论的“前史”和传统脉络。

Title:

Human and Nature in Xie Lingyun and Wang Wei’s Poetry

Abstract:
The thesis will use the global ecology method to analyze the Chinese traditional natural poetry of Xie Lingyun and Wang Wei. This thesis focuses on how natural ecosystems and imagery relate to Chinese philosophy, politics, and reclusion. The thesis will compare natural elements in Xie Lingyun and Wang Wei’s poems, indicating the transformation from environmental politics to environmental reclusion. It will mainly argue Xie Lingyun uses Confucius in environmental politics and uses Daoism as a regimen to live longer. On the other hand, Wang Wei uses Daoism as a metaphysical cultivation and Confucius as moral cultivation. With the introduction mainly presenting the intellectual background and historical facts, there will be three chapters in my thesis. Chapter 1 will analyze the actions (you wei有为) and non-actions (wu wei无为) of the two poets. Chapter 2 is about the physical and metaphysical in the two poets’ reclusion. Chapter 3 mentions how the poets transform from environmental politics to environmental reclusion.

词体文学写闺情的传统历来受到学界关注。但既有研究忽略了男性词人与女性词人所作的闺情词在意象选择方面的差异性。屏风书写是分析此种差异性的合理入径。作为闺阁中常见而重要的家具,屏风高频出现于男性词人的作品,却几乎不见于女性词人写就的闺情词中。这种差异背后关键的性别动因未得到充分探讨。本文以屏风书写为中心,围绕文本写作视角与对闺阁空间的感知两方面分别剖析不同性别作者的作品。
本文论述分为以下三部分。首先,以男性词人作品集《花间集》中的闺情词为文本依据,揭示男性词人将闺阁中屏内空间视为不完满存在的预设。这些合围的屏风内是等待并邀请爱人注入意义的封闭空间。男性叙述的空间逻辑也流露出男性作者近似“窥视”的视角。其次,依据《花间集》后男性词人的闺情词文本,着重分析“屏-镜”的共现所象征的“窥视-自视”双重观看结构,并结合宋代闺阁题材绘画中“屏-镜”结构的高频出现,探讨这种结构背后男性词人与画家的创作动因。最后,依据女性词人为数不多的屏风书写,论述这种书写背后关注物的实用性而非艳情投射的视角。同时,以女性词中最常见的具备空间划分功能的器物帘幕为对照,探讨了女性词人笔下另一种向外的互动式空间感知。

在中国近现代的思想文化流变中,张岱年先生主张文化“综合创新”,其哲学理论在于“唯物、理想、解析,综合于一”,立足中国本位博采众长创造新文化,体现了中国近现代思想史中的思想激荡,中、西、马的交汇与合一,力图在哲学思想上对处于文化转型期、面临内忧外患困境、社会变革风雷激荡的中国,开出一剂引领实践的思想良方。基于比较哲学的视角,成中英先生的本体诠释学,吸取了《易经》的精华,主张“和谐化的辩证法”,对于“中国哲学的重建”与“中国哲学的现代化与世界化”也提出了独到见解,“综合”就是体认不同的事物与观点以达到一个整体思考并表现出一个整体的秩序,“创造”则是有意识的提出整合不同事物的了解及不同观点的思维和认识,须将综合的创造与创造的综合融为一体,赋予中国哲学所包容的人生与人性之经验与体验以理性的语吉与理性的表达方式,方能为世界做出普遍性的贡献。两者的思想有相通之处,可来对比论证分析东西古今的“综合创新”的文化观之流变。

Taixu on Christianity. Corpus analysis of the master’s Collected Works

Abstract:
As one of the key Chinese Buddhist reformers of his time, Master Taixu’s 太虛 works have been analyzed through numerous angles. One topic, however, received less scholarly attention so far. This is his understanding of Christianity. A few analyses have been written in Chinese and English addressing the topic, notably the works of Darui Long, Yu-Shuang Yao and Richard Gombrich, as well as Xue Yu 學愚, Wang Ying 王鹰 and Zhang Jingde 張金德. However, these analyses mostly focus on one particular aspect of the master’s approach, such as his criticism of Christian theology, or Christianity’s practical features he incorporated into his own reforms. Xue Yu provides an excellent account of the evolution of the master’s views, however that account can also be augmented. Therefore, this paper and the author’s broader work sets out to fill this crucial gap in the literature and provide a comprehensive account of Master Taixu’s views and understanding of Christianity. This particular paper would present the results of the author’s recent research conducted jointly with a data scientist colleague, which set out to analyze the Collected Works of Master Taixu 太虛大師全書 in relation to Christianity, utilizing corpus analysis. In our analysis, we segmented the complete corpus into 5 million Chinese characters, and after reassembling them into words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters, we could launch inquiries into the mentions of Christianity within the corpus. The main results of the analysis are as follows. We located all texts, writings and speeches, where the master mentions Christianity. These number a surprisingly high amount, namely 264 individual texts out of the 1447 total, which is the largest amount compared to the mentions of other religions besides Buddhism within the corpus. The differences in his discussion of various religions also became apparent through the analysis of key words he used in relation to them. For Christianity, what stood out, was the prominent mentioning of philosophy, science and research, which was lacking in the discussions of other religions. Then, we also determined the dates when the texts on Christianity were produced and established a timeline demonstrating the results. This timeline clearly shows when Taixu focused more on Christianity, such as right after his yearlong European and North American journey. Finally, we also collected the spatial information regarding half of all texts in the corpus, including all text about Christianity, and thus could create a series of maps which present when and where Taixu wrote his articles and gave his speeches regarding Christianity compared to the entirety of his works. These maps, we also uploaded to a webpage to enable further research on the topic open access, which the author would present at the conference as well. Hence, the author strongly believes that the present paper could contribute to the scholarly discussion regarding Master Taixu’s views and the increased understanding of Buddhist–Christian dialogue in early 20th century China.

Exploring Lao She’s Christian Faith through His Literary Creation

Abstract:
In 1922, Lao She (1899-1966, originally named Shu Qingchun, and courtesy name Sheyu) was baptized as a Christian at the Gangwashi Church of Beijing. After embracing faith, he chose the courtesy name “Sheyu”(舍予), which not only splits his surname “Shu”(舒) into two parts but also embodies the spirit of self-sacrifice found in Jesus Christ. Subsequently, all his writings on Christianity were signed “Shu Sheyu.” It is noteworthy that Lao She placed greater emphasis on the establishment of the church in China than on the spiritual development of Christians. Scholars have described this type of believer as “social evangelicals,” characterized by a patriotism that outweighs their devotion to God. They believed in demonstrating the concrete contributions of religion to society through secular means. This perspective led to another value: prioritizing “this life” over “eternal life.” Lao She not only expressed this viewpoint in his writings on religion but also explored the balance between the two through various characters in his novels. This paper will first examine Lao She’s considerations regarding the balance between “nation” and “Lord” in his plans to build a Chinese church. It will then elaborate on his interpretations and applications of biblical texts, and finally analyze his multifaceted views on Christianity through his literary works.
